Twitter has today announced ongoing plans to establish an office in Ghana in what seems as a key step to cement it’s Presence in the African continent – home to the world fastest growing markets and youngest population.
This will be Twitters inaugural office on the continent, coming about six years after FACEBOOK opened shop in Johannesburg- South Africa.
Making the announcement , Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said they chose Ghana because, ” As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate for”.
Furthermore, the social media firm believes Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with their overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support her efforts to improve and tailor her service across Africa.
” We’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana. To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent” said Dorsey.
Prior to this bold move, the firm had laid foundations through partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana.
Welcoming the news by Jack, Ghanas President Nana Akufo – Addo said , ” The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is EXCELLENT news and is critical for the development of Ghanas hugely important technology sector”.
